Muslim and Dalit Leaders Accuse Six Rebel Mumbai MPs of Betrayal

A section of Muslim and Dalit politicians in Mumbai, including representatives from Shivajinagar-Mankhurd and Mumbai North East, has accused six rebel Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction of betrayal after they defected to the rival Shiv Sena. The political leaders stated that these MPs secured their victories largely due to en bloc voting by Muslim and Dalit communities.

The controversy arose after the six MPs, who fought the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on the plank of saving secularism and the Constitution, chose to align with the Shiv Sena faction that is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This move has sparked allegations of political betrayal from community representatives who campaigned for them.

Among the MPs accused of defection is Sanjay Dina Patil, who represents the Mumbai North East constituency. Local leaders point out that Patil and the other five MPs benefited heavily from the consolidated support of minority and Dalit voters who wanted to protect constitutional values.

Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi, who represents the Shivajinagar-Mankhurd constituency, spoke out strongly against the defections. He alleged that the electorate in his constituency, as well as in the other areas represented by the rebel MPs, feel deeply cheated by the political shift.

Azmi stated that the voters chose these representatives because they ran on a platform of secularism. He argued that by joining a party within the NDA, the rebel MPs have aligned themselves with a political force that works against secularism and the Constitution.

The political shift has raised significant concerns regarding voter trust and the future of coalition dynamics among Muslim, Dalit, and Shiv Sena (UBT) supporters in Mumbai. Critics argue that the defections undermine the mandate given by voters who cast their ballots specifically to counter the NDA's policies.
