Navi Mumbai Mayor Orders Safety Audit and Action Against Negligent Officials

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a comprehensive citywide safety crackdown following three days of incessant rainfall that left large parts of the city waterlogged. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil has ordered a safety audit and initiated action against civic officials over two monsoon-related incidents. These incidents, which involved an electric shock case and a death at a hospital, have sparked significant public outrage across the region.

On Wednesday, Mayor Patil conducted a personal inspection of the rain-affected areas stretching from Belapur to Digha to evaluate the civic response and the extent of the waterlogging. Following the ground inspection, she chaired an emergency review meeting to address the critical safety lapses that had been identified.

The emergency meeting was attended by Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, Deputy Mayor Dashrath Bhagat, and other senior civic officials from the NMMC. During the session, Mayor Patil directed the officials to take immediate measures to plug all safety lapses before more heavy rain hits the city of Navi Mumbai.

As part of the civic crackdown, the mayor has put the NMMC on notice. She has ordered immediate action to be taken against any municipal officials who are found to have been negligent in their duties. The upcoming citywide safety audit is designed to prevent further monsoon-related hazards and ensure public safety during the ongoing wet spell.

The directives issued during the meeting focus on addressing the immediate vulnerabilities in the city's infrastructure. Civic authorities are now tasked with executing the safety audit and rectifying lapses to avoid any further incidents similar to the electric shock case and the hospital death.
