Navy Helicopter Rescues Injured Seafarer Off Mumbai Coast Amid Red Alert

An Indian Navy Sea King helicopter crew operating from the INS Shikra air station successfully executed the urgent medical evacuation of an injured seafarer off the coast of Mumbai on Saturday, July 4. The rescue operation was conducted under hazardous conditions, as Mumbai was placed under a "red alert" due to severe weather.
The injured seafarer was located aboard the MT Desh Shakti, a crude oil tanker operated by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). The vessel was positioned off the Mumbai coast when the medical emergency arose, prompting the call for naval assistance.
According to a defence spokesperson, the rescue crew faced significant environmental challenges during the operation. The region was experiencing incessant rains, poor visibility, and rough seas, which complicated the aerial transit and the evacuation process.
To retrieve the injured seafarer from the deck of the MT Desh Shakti, the Sea King helicopter crew deployed a rescue basket. After successfully hoisting the patient into the aircraft, the crew stabilized him onboard. The helicopter then flew the seafarer ashore, where he was transferred to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
The defence spokesperson stated that the successful operation reaffirms the Indian Navy’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding lives at sea. The spokesperson also noted that the mission highlights the Navy's established reputation as the "First Responders" in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The emergency evacuation occurred on a day of widespread disruption across Mumbai. Heavy and incessant rainfall threw normal daily life out of gear throughout the city and its surrounding metropolitan region. The severe weather led to multiple incidents of road cave-ins, tree falls, and house collapses, while also causing major disruptions to both road and rail traffic. Despite the active red alert and the resulting chaos onshore and offshore, the naval aircrew completed the rescue without further incident.
