Navy Sailor and Family of Three Found Dead in Mumbai's Cuffe Parade
A 30-year-old Indian Navy sailor, his wife, and their two young children were found dead at their residence in Navy Nagar, Cuffe Parade, in south Mumbai, on the evening of August 15. The Cuffe Parade police have registered an accidental death report and initiated an investigation into whether the incident was a case of mass suicide or a murder-suicide.
The deceased have been identified as sailor Puranmal Shambhulal Mehra, his 28-year-old wife Oma Puranmal Mehra, their three-year-old son Yash Puranmal Mehra, and their two-month-old infant. According to police, Puranmal was found hanging inside the residence, while his wife and two children were found dead on a bed.
The incident came to light after Puranmal's father repeatedly tried to reach him by phone on August 15. When he received no response, he alerted the Navy control room. Navy personnel were dispatched to the residence, discovered the four bodies inside the house, and informed the local police.
All four bodies were transported to J.J. Hospital via the Cuffe Parade Mobile 1 ambulance. A panchnama was conducted at the scene, and post-mortem procedures were initiated. Preliminary investigations suggest that Puranmal died by suicide, while his wife and children are suspected to have died after consuming a poisonous substance. The exact causes of death will be confirmed following post-mortem and forensic reports.
Police did not find a suicide note at the scene, but recovered several medicines that are being verified with medical professionals. Investigators suspect Puranmal was under mental stress and undergoing treatment. Police sources noted that Puranmal had been involved in monetary disputes with his father-in-law, with whom he had a heated argument the previous week. Oma had reportedly told her father at the time that she feared for her life.
Before his death, Puranmal, who was originally from Rajasthan, reportedly sent a WhatsApp message to his father and brother asking them to collect his body. A defence spokesperson stated that the Indian Navy is extending all possible assistance to the Mumbai Police investigation, while an internal naval inquiry has also been launched into the incident.
