Nazim Shaikh defends viral backflip video at Gateway of India as rescue work

A Mumbai resident has defended a viral video showing him performing a backflip into the Arabian Sea at the Gateway of India, clarifying that the dive was part of his ongoing rescue efforts rather than a reckless stunt. Nazim Shaikh released a video response addressing online backlash after the clip sparked safety concerns and criticism across social media platforms.
The viral footage captured Shaikh standing near the waterfront at the Gateway of India, one of Mumbai's busiest tourist attractions. He then performed a backflip into the sea, disappearing briefly beneath the water before resurfacing and swimming through rough waves.
The video quickly triggered concern among internet users who feared the act could encourage dangerous imitation or lead to serious accidents. Critics pointed out that the waters around the Gateway of India are unpredictable due to changing sea conditions, tides, and currents. One social media user commented, "Next time you'll appear in headlines. Don’t be stupid," while another labeled the jump as "reckless."
Following the criticism, Shaikh released another video to explain the circumstances behind the footage. Responding directly to a fellow content creator who had publicly criticised him, Shaikh urged people not to judge the situation based solely on a few seconds of footage.
According to Shaikh, the dive was not a bid for online popularity or a social media stunt. Instead, he stated that he frequently enters the sea in that area to assist people who get into trouble in the water. Shaikh claimed he has been involved in rescuing people near the Gateway of India waterfront for several years.
He also stated that local Mumbai Police personnel are aware of his rescue activities and encouraged sceptics to visit the location to speak with people who know his work. While these claims were not independently verified in the videos, Shaikh maintained that the circulating clip lacked the full context of the event.
Following Shaikh's clarification, public opinion shifted on social media. Several users softened their criticism, with one writing, "You are doing good work bro." Others praised him as courageous and expressed admiration for his willingness to risk his safety to save lives.
