NDRF deployed to Mahad as Raigad and Ratnagiri brace for heavy rain

On Monday, Maharashtra Minister for Women and Child Development Aditi Tatkare reviewed the flood situation and emergency preparedness in Raigad and Ratnagiri districts, directing local administrations in Mahad, Sudhagad, Roha, Karjat, and Khopoli to take immediate precautionary measures. The review came in response to a Red Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Monday and Tuesday, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the region.

Disaster Management Department Director Bhalchandra Chavan briefed Minister Tatkare on the current impact of the heavy rainfall and the administrative preparedness to tackle emergencies. Tatkare declared that the next 48 hours are highly critical for both Raigad and Ratnagiri districts. She instructed officials to implement all necessary precautionary measures on priority to minimize any flood-related damage.

To strengthen the local disaster response, a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been stationed in Mahad and kept on standby for immediate deployment. Tatkare also confirmed that she has requested an additional contingent of 145 emergency personnel. This force is intended to ensure a quicker and more effective response in the flood-prone areas of Sudhagad and Roha if the weather worsens.

The minister highlighted the role of local voluntary organizations in Karjat and Khopoli, which have actively assisted citizens during previous flood situations. Tatkare stated she is in constant touch with these groups and assured them that the state government will provide all resources required for relief and rescue operations. She added that their services could be utilized in other parts of the district if necessary.

Currently, the state government is monitoring the evolving weather and flood situation from the State Emergency Operations Centre. This monitoring is being conducted in close coordination with district administrations and disaster management agencies. Tatkare expressed confidence that all emergency response teams and security agencies are fully prepared to handle any eventuality arising from the ongoing heavy rainfall.

Concluding her review, Tatkare appealed to the public to exercise caution during the heavy spell of rain. She urged citizens to avoid stepping out of their homes unless absolutely necessary and to refrain from unnecessary travel while the Red Alert remains in force. She also advised residents to strictly follow the official safety advisories issued by the local administration.
