New Chembur Metro Station Creates Three-Way Transit Link

Mumbai Metro Line 2B’s new Chembur station has established a three-way public transport interchange in Chembur, linking the metro corridor directly with the city’s suburban railway and monorail networks within short walking distances.

The newly linked facility offers commuters moving through Mumbai’s eastern suburbs multiple options to switch between different transport systems based on destination, travel time, and traffic conditions. The new Metro Line 2B station is situated approximately 200 metres from the existing Chembur suburban railway station, enabling passengers arriving by local suburban trains to walk directly to the metro line.

In addition to the suburban railway link, the V N Purav Marg Monorail station is located roughly 100 metres from the new Chembur metro station. This close setup provides a direct walking connection between the two rail-based transport systems, allowing monorail passengers to transfer to the metro corridor without depending on road transit.

By placing the three transit modes in close proximity, the hub reduces the requirement for short road journeys between stations, helping commuters avoid using auto-rickshaws or cabs to switch networks.

Chembur serves as the sixth station on the operational eastern end of Metro Line 2B, extending the line's service beyond Diamond Garden. Although the currently operational section remains relatively short, the addition at Chembur integrates the corridor into Mumbai’s existing rail and monorail transport grid.

The full Metro Line 2B corridor is planned to span from Mandale to DN Nagar, passing through key commercial hubs including the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). As additional sections of the line open to the public, the Chembur interchange is expected to handle higher commuter traffic between the eastern suburbs and the rest of the city.
