NGO demands BMC clear corporate cement planters blocking Andheri East footpath

The city-based NGO Watchdog Foundation has formally urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to immediately inspect and clear alleged illegal encroachments on a busy public footpath in Andheri East. The civic complaint specifically targets the pedestrian stretch located between the JB Nagar and Western Express Highway Metro Blue Line 1 stations.
In a formal complaint letter addressed to the BMC dated July 3, 2026, the trustees and advisors of the Watchdog Foundation raised serious concerns over the ongoing obstruction of public space. The NGO has alleged that various corporate establishments operating along this particular stretch of the road have unlawfully encroached upon the public pedestrian walkway, restricting access for local commuters.
According to the complaint, these corporate offices have placed heavy cement pots containing ornamental plants along the footpath. The Watchdog Foundation asserted that these large planters were not installed for genuine environmental beautification purposes. Instead, the NGO stated that the private establishments positioned the heavy obstacles specifically to keep hawkers off the footpath.
The NGO's letter argues that this action amounts to private corporate entities unlawfully occupying municipal property. By taking matters into their own hands to block hawkers, these establishments are allegedly acting as unauthorised enforcers on public land. This has led to the unlawful obstruction and occupation of public pedestrian space by private entities.
The situation has raised local concerns regarding traffic and pedestrian safety in the Andheri area, where the footpath serves as a vital link between the two Metro Blue Line 1 stations.
The Watchdog Foundation has requested that the BMC take swift action to inspect the site and clear the footpath between the JB Nagar and Western Express Highway Metro Blue Line 1 stations. The NGO emphasizes that the public pedestrian space in Andheri East must remain free and accessible for all residents, and that private entities should not be permitted to unlawfully occupy municipal property.
