NGT orders joint inspection into illegal waste dumping in Thane's Diva mangrove area

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered a joint inspection to investigate the alleged illegal dumping of waste and the destruction of mangroves in the Diva area of Thane. The order was issued on July 3, 2026, after the tribunal admitted an application highlighting the environmental degradation.

The application was filed by the environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) Vanashakti and another applicant. The matter was heard by the NGT's Western Zone Bench in Pune.

The legal application names the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) and other respondents. It alleges that unidentified persons have been dumping debris, wet and dry waste, and construction and demolition waste across several CTS survey numbers in Diva.

According to the applicants, this dumping activity has led to the destruction of mangroves in the area. In response, the NGT has initiated the official joint inspection to investigate the environmental damage.

The matter is scheduled for a further tribunal hearing on August 21, 2026.
