NMMC Appoints Hospital Inspectors After Pregnant Woman's Death in Airoli

On July 14, 2026, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) appointed special hospital inspectors to monitor and oversee public hospitals in Airoli, Nerul, and Vashi. This major administrative overhaul follows the death of a pregnant woman and her eight-month-old unborn baby at the Rajmata Jijau Municipal Hospital in Airoli.
Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde assigned senior health officials to supervise the three civic hospitals. Medical Health Officer Dr. Rajesh Mhatre has been tasked with supervising Nerul Public Hospital. Assistant Medical Health Officer Dr. Dhanvanti Ghadge will oversee Vashi Public Hospital, while Assistant Medical Health Officer Dr. Ratnaprabha Chavan will monitor the Airoli hospital.
Under the new oversight mechanism, the inspectors will conduct regular audits of medicine stocks, cleanliness, manpower, bed availability, and medical equipment. They will also review inpatient and outpatient services, patient nutrition, maternal and infant mortality rates, and patient referrals to other hospitals.
The recommendations made by these inspectors will be mandatory for medical superintendents to implement. Compliance reports must be submitted regularly to the Health Department. To ensure strict monitoring, the Additional Commissioner-I will review the inspectors' performance on a weekly basis and submit reports directly to the Municipal Commissioner.
The administrative action comes after serious concerns were raised regarding the functioning of civic hospitals following the death at the Airoli facility. The NMMC introduced these stricter monitoring measures to strengthen accountability within the local healthcare system.
"The objective is to make the public healthcare system more transparent, accountable and efficient," said Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde. He directed officials to implement the new monitoring system with immediate effect, stating that regular inspections and timely corrective measures will help improve healthcare quality and prevent similar incidents.
