NMMC Clarifies Morbe Dam Has Not Overflowed and Is At 42.48 Percent Capacity

On July 6, 2026, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) issued an official clarification debunking viral social media rumors that claimed the Morbe Dam had overflowed. The civic body confirmed that the reservoir, which is located at Morbe village in Khalapur taluka of Raigad district and supplies drinking water to Navi Mumbai, is currently at only 42.48 percent of its total storage capacity.
The clarification was prompted by a misleading message circulating widely on social media platforms. The spread of this rumor coincided with heavy rains in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which have recently led to increased water levels in various water bodies across the area.
According to the NMMC, the confusion among citizens arose because the viral message actually pertained to a completely different water body: the Morbe Minor Irrigation Project. This project is managed by the Water Resources Department and is located in Panvel taluka of Raigad district.
Information received from the Water Resources Department confirmed that the Morbe Minor Irrigation Project did overflow on July 5, 2026. The NMMC stressed that this irrigation scheme and the NMMC-owned Morbe Dam are entirely separate projects managed by different authorities.
With rumors spreading rapidly during the ongoing monsoon season, the NMMC has appealed to residents not to forward or believe unverified messages circulating on social media. Civic officials have urged citizens to depend only on information released through official government channels to avoid unnecessary panic.
The corporation assured residents that weather and reservoir conditions are being monitored regularly, and official updates will be issued whenever necessary. To assist citizens, the NMMC has shared its toll-free emergency helpline numbers, 1800 222 309 and 1800 222 310, for anyone requiring assistance or seeking verified information.
As heavy rainfall continues across the region, authorities have advised residents to remain alert, follow official advisories, and refrain from spreading unverified information that could create confusion or panic among the public.
