NMMC Officer Miscarries After Mob Manhandling in Airoli Demolition Drive

An assistant municipal commissioner of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) reportedly suffered a miscarriage after being manhandled by a mob during a demolition drive in Airoli Sector 2 on July 30. Following the incident, the civic body squarely blamed the city police for inaction in a note submitted before the Bombay High Court.

The matter was brought to the court's attention by NMMC advocate Anil Anturkar, who mentioned the occurrence without naming the officer. According to the submission, the ward officer was surrounded by a mob of locals during the razing exercise, during which one person allegedly referred to having contact with a minister.

An NMMC official source confirmed the incident, stating that the officer had sought assistance from the civic chief prior to participating in the demolition drives. The official was also seen in video footage participating in the drive in Airoli.

Deputy municipal commissioner (encroachment) Sanjay Shinde could not be reached for a comment despite repeated attempts.

The High Court bench was hearing a contempt petition filed by advocate Kishor Shetty regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on illegal constructions in Navi Mumbai. As part of the proceedings, the NMMC submitted that civic authorities had taken action against 63 illegal structures between June 16 and July 7.
