NMMC Prunes Over 7000 Trees and Removes 104 Dead Trees in Navi Mumbai Wards

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Garden Department has pruned 7,036 trees and removed 104 dangerous or dead trees across eight wards—including Airoli, Belapur, Nerul, Turbhe, Vashi, Koparkhairane, Ghansoli, and Digha—following the collapse of around 100 trees during the onset of the monsoon. The civic body undertook the emergency operation on a war footing over a recent three-to-four-day period to prevent potential damage to human lives and property.
The intensive tree-trimming drive was launched after heavy rains and stormy winds uprooted dozens of trees across the city. To execute the massive task, the NMMC garden department deployed nine specialized tree-pruning vehicles across the eight wards to conduct daily operations.
According to data released by the civic body, the highest volume of pruning was recorded in the Airoli node, where workers trimmed 1,622 trees. Belapur followed closely with 1,400 pruned trees. The department also pruned 1,159 trees in Turbhe, 1,014 in Ghansoli, 672 in Koparkhairane, 578 in Nerul, 478 in Digha, and 113 in Vashi.
The civic action was initiated based on regular surveys conducted by local garden assistants. Additionally, the department responded to a surge of complaints and requests sent by local citizens and corporators. These grievances were submitted through various channels, including official applications, phone calls, WhatsApp messages, and the civic administration's grievances mobile application.
During the survey and pruning drive, officials identified 104 trees within the civic jurisdiction that were dry, dead, or prima facie dangerous. These hazardous trees were completely cut down and removed to avoid accidents.
An NMMC official stated that the combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds was uprooting even healthy trees, leading to daily emergency calls from residents. To ensure quick response times, the garden department established a coordination system with the fire department and the solid waste management department to quickly clear uprooted trees and fallen branches from roads and public pathways.
