One-Third of Mumbai Airport Flights to Shift to Navi Mumbai Airport from October 2026

Flight operations across Mumbai are set to undergo a major restructuring starting October 2026, with one-third of the air traffic movements currently handled by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport scheduled to shift to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport from October 1.

The relocation of flights is expected to impact passengers travelling from Mumbai who have already made advance flight bookings for journeys scheduled after September 30, 2026.

In addition to the shift to Navi Mumbai, another significant operational change will take place within Mumbai Airport itself starting October 25, 2026. From that date, one-third of the flights currently operating out of Terminal 1 will be moved to Terminal 2.

Further structural modifications are slated for early 2027. Demolition work on the northern section of Terminal 1B is scheduled to commence on January 15, 2027, as part of redevelopment initiatives. Terminal 1 is nearly 80 years old and has already had a portion demolished previously.

Currently, Mumbai Airport's Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 combined handle approximately 950 flight movements each day. Terminal 1 has an annual passenger-handling capacity of around 15 million travellers, whereas Terminal 2 is built to handle roughly 40 million passengers annually.

With air traffic being redistributed between the two regional airports as well as across existing terminals, passengers holding advance bookings for travel from October 2026 onwards have been advised to verify their departure details. Travellers should check directly with their respective airlines prior to their journey to confirm their departure airport and terminal, as the information assigned at the time of ticket purchase could be subject to change.
