Over 1 Crore Commuters Register for MSRTC NCMC Smart Cards in Maharashtra
Over one crore passengers have registered for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation’s (MSRTC) National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) smart card in Mumbai and across the state, with more than 64.91 lakh cards activated as of August 12. The smart card will become mandatory for women, senior citizens, and Amrut senior citizens travelling on state transport buses starting September 1.
According to official data released by MSRTC, a total of 1,01,73,838 passengers have completed registration for the NCMC smart card, and 64,91,065 cards have been successfully activated. The transport initiative is designed to modernise the public bus ticketing system by making travel more convenient, seamless, and completely cashless for regular commuters.
The first phase of the implementation specifically covers women, senior citizens, and Amrut senior citizens who utilise state transport services. The transport corporation has urged eligible passengers in these categories who have not yet registered to complete their smart card registration before the mandatory requirement takes effect at the start of September.
Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik stated that the extensive public participation demonstrated commuter confidence in the state's digital transit infrastructure. He noted that the response to the NCMC smart card reflects passengers' trust in this digital transformation, adding that the corporation intends to expand technological solutions to save commuters' time and enhance overall travel convenience.
Following the phase for senior commuters and women, MSRTC will begin the registration drive for school students across Maharashtra starting August 15. Under this initiative, authorised corporation representatives will visit schools directly to handle student registrations and complete the required procedures on site.
The corporation has also issued an advisory instructing students and parents not to register through unauthorised centres or third-party individuals, cautioning that all student registrations should take place only through official channels.
