Over 208 mm Rain Floods Andheri Streets and Shuts Roads as Mogra Nalla Overflows

Torrential rainfall of 208 mm battered Andheri on Saturday, causing the Mogra nalla to overflow and forcing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to shut down roads as severe waterlogging disrupted local transport. The heavy downpour, which exceeded 200 mm in a 10-hour span across several Mumbai suburbs between 8:00 AM and 6:30 PM, prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert.
In Andheri, the Mogra nalla—a critical drain flowing through Andheri East and West before emptying into the Arabian Sea via Versova creek—began overflowing around noon. Associated drainage networks also breached their limits, spilling floodwater onto SV Road, Link Road, and the streets surrounding the Andheri subway.
The flooding left residents wading through knee-deep water, with the waterlogging persisting for several hours. The situation was further aggravated by a 4.26-metre high tide at 2:50 PM, which prevented the accumulated rainwater from draining.
According to weather data, Andheri recorded 208 mm of rain between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM on Saturday. Other areas also saw intense downpours, with Vikhroli receiving 247 mm, Powai logging 240 mm, and Chincholi recording 220 mm. The IMD's Santacruz station registered 164 mm of rainfall during the day.
The severe weather heavily disrupted public transportation. On the Western railway line, water flooded tracks between Virar and Nalasopara, delaying trains by 15 to 20 minutes. Central railway main line services faced delays of 20 to 25 minutes, while Harbour line trains ran 10 to 15 minutes late. Metro services were also affected by the persistent downpour.
The IMD has forecast continued heavy rain across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with the red alert remaining in place through Sunday before showers are expected to subside by Monday morning.
