Over 30 Lakh Names Removed From Mumbai Electoral Rolls in Revision

More than 30 lakh names of deceased and migrated voters have been removed from Mumbai's electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Maharashtra election authorities confirmed. Addressing Election Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) at a training session in Vile Parle on Wednesday, Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam instructed officials to ensure that no eligible voter is wrongfully excluded during the drive.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai's original electoral roll comprised around one crore voters. The intensive verification exercise identified and removed over 30 lakh entries of individuals who had either died or shifted away from their registered addresses.

Speaking at the training programme organized for the Electoral Roll Special Intensive Revision 2026, Chockalingam emphasized that while cleaning the voter list is essential, election personnel must take care to protect the voting rights of every legitimate citizen.

The Chief Electoral Officer also directed officials to take strict legal action against fraudulent practices, stating that a police complaint should be filed if anyone is found attempting to submit false information during the revision process.
