Panvel Family on Kailash Mansarovar Pilgrimage Escapes Nepal Flash Floods

A family from Panvel undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage narrowly escaped devastating flash floods in Nepal after departing the affected region several hours before the disaster occurred.

The group of five travellers from Panvel is now reported safe in Tibet, having cleared the danger zone eight to nine hours before the flash floods struck routes leading through Nepal.

Ashwin Shah, a resident of Panvel who remained at home after previously completing the pilgrimage in 2005, confirmed that his family members are unhurt. The group includes his wife Anjana Ashwin Shah, his son Dhiren Ashwin Shah, his daughter-in-law Yukti Dhiren Shah, his younger brother Jayant Shah, and his sister-in-law Hansa Shah.

According to Shah, the family had moved through the disaster-hit zone well ahead of the deluge. By the time floodwaters and sludge tore through parts of Nepal, including areas around Nuwakot district and the Trishuli Dam, the group had already crossed safely into Tibet to continue their journey.

Rescue and restoration operations have been underway in Nepal's Nuwakot district, where heavy equipment and excavators were deployed to clear sludge and debris left behind by the flash floods.
