Panvel Municipal Corporation Marks Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

The Panvel Municipal Corporation organised a special programme at Adya Krantiveer Vasudev Balwant Phadke Natyagruha in Panvel on Friday to mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day and honour those who suffered and lost their lives during the Partition of India.

Speaking at the event, BJP MLA Prashant Thakur said that while India celebrates its Independence, it is essential to remember the pain, suffering, and trauma inflicted on millions. He noted that many people made immense sacrifices for freedom and emphasised that the younger generation must study history with sensitivity and awareness.

Mayor Nitin Patil addressed the gathering, stating that although August 15 is a moment of national pride, the painful displacement and homelessness caused on August 14 should not be forgotten. He urged citizens to prioritise national unity, sovereignty, and social harmony.

Members of families affected by Partition, including Poonam Jethlani, Chandrakant Devani, Gopichand Wadhwa, and Adv. Manohar Sachdev, attended the gathering and were felicitated. Devani and Sachdev shared their families' experiences of displacement and the challenges of rebuilding their lives from scratch.

The event also featured an informational exhibition titled Bharat Ka Vibhajan – Smritiyan, Peeda, which displayed documents on mass migration, the Radcliffe Line, contemporary newspaper reports, and personal accounts. Attendees observed a two-minute silence, signed a memorial board, and lit mobile phone torches in tribute.

Raigad and Thane District Information Officer Manoj Sanap performed a solo act titled Shaheed Captain Vinayak Gore, portraying the life of the Kargil War martyr. A musical performance of patriotic songs was also presented during the observance.
