Panvel Municipal Corporation Orders Evacuation of 64 Dangerous Buildings

PANVEL — The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued an urgent appeal and notices for residents to immediately vacate 64 buildings classified under the C-1 category as highly dangerous. On July 2, 2026, municipal authorities warned that continued occupancy of these structures during the intensifying monsoon poses a severe risk to life and property.

Municipal Commissioner Mangesh Chitale stated that the civic body is committed to preventing monsoon-related disasters. The decision follows a structural survey conducted for the 2026–27 financial year, which identified the 64 highly dangerous structures requiring immediate evacuation across the corporation's jurisdiction.

The survey was carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and state government directives. Although occupants were given prior notices to relocate in compliance with directions from the Bombay High Court and the state government, some residents have continued to stay in the unsafe structures.

To ensure compliance, the PMC has warned that it will disconnect electricity and water supply to the dangerous buildings. The civic body also stated it would use police assistance to carry out forced evacuations if residents refuse to vacate.

With heavy rainfall currently affecting the region, the corporation highlighted that the possibility of dilapidated buildings collapsing cannot be ruled out. Officials urged residents to shift to safer accommodation immediately to ensure the safety of their families.

The PMC clarified that if any accident or structural collapse occurs, the responsibility for any loss of life or property will rest with the building owners, occupants, and tenants who chose to remain despite the warnings. Property owners and occupiers remain responsible for conducting structural audits of their buildings.

Ward offices have been directed to make public announcements in the affected areas and install warning boards outside the unsafe buildings to advise people against entering the premises.

Citizens requiring assistance or reporting emergencies can contact the Panvel Municipal Corporation’s control room at 022-27461500 or the toll-free helpline at 1800-227701, according to Deputy Commissioner Ravikiran Ghodke.
