Panvel RTO Warns Bus and Auto Operators Against Overcharging During Ganeshotsav
The Regional Transport Office in Panvel, Navi Mumbai, has issued a strict warning to auto-rickshaw and passenger bus operators against overcharging commuters, misbehaving with passengers, and flouting traffic rules during Ganeshotsav. The directive comes ahead of the festive rush, when lakhs of devotees are scheduled to travel to the Konkan region from Mumbai and various other parts of the state.
Transport authorities have instructed all commercial operators to strictly adhere to government-prescribed fare charts and prioritise commuter safety. Officials confirmed that strict legal action under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act will be initiated against both drivers and vehicle owners found violating regulations during this period.
An RTO official emphasised that passenger safety remains the primary focus of the administration during the festival rush. The official stated that transport operators must not take advantage of the surge in passenger demand to levy excessive fares or compromise safety norms, warning that strict enforcement action will follow any non-compliance with prescribed rules.
Specific guidelines have been laid down for auto-rickshaw drivers across the region. Operators have been told to maintain valid vehicle documentation and park strictly in an orderly manner without obstructing traffic flow at major transport hubs, including railway stations and bus stands. In addition, auto drivers must not carry passengers beyond their permitted seating capacity and are required to maintain proper conduct with commuters at all times.
Private and passenger bus operators have also been issued specific safety and operational instructions. Operators must ensure that critical safety equipment, including emergency exit doors, functional fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits, are in proper working condition. Bus drivers have been warned against dangerous driving practices and driving under the influence of alcohol, with penalties applying to both drivers and vehicle owners.
To prevent severe traffic congestion across travel corridors, bus operators have been directed to properly coordinate and schedule their trip routes and departure timings throughout the festival period.
The Panvel RTO has asked passengers to actively report any instances of fare overcharging, rude behaviour, or traffic violations. Commuters can submit complaints via email to [email protected], including the relevant vehicle registration number, travel route, and specific incident details. Authorities have also appealed to devotees heading to Konkan to obey all traffic regulations and promptly report any irregularities observed during transit.
