Pen Civic Body Removes Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Artwork After Public Outcry

A controversy surrounding a modern-art depiction of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj installed at the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Chowk on Chinchapada Ring Road in Pen, Raigad, has been resolved after the civic administration dismantled and removed the artwork following strong objections from devotees and community groups.

The depiction had faced severe criticism from several Shiv-premi organisations and local residents, who expressed deep discontent over the visual design. According to the objecting citizens and groups, the modern-art form and overall presentation of the revered Maratha ruler were inappropriate and had hurt their sentiments.

The issue gained widespread public attention after Pen resident Vaibhavi Mhatre recorded and shared a video of the newly installed artwork on social media. As the video circulated across digital platforms, opposition intensified, prompting multiple citizens and organisations to register their objections and formally demand that the civic authorities take down the structure immediately.

Taking note of the escalating controversy, the municipal administration moved to contain the situation. Officials initially covered the installation at the chowk. Following persistent demands from community groups, the administration subsequently removed the artwork entirely from the square.

Following the removal, Pen Municipal Council President Pritam Patil issued a public apology over the matter. Patil announced that the civic body had acknowledged the community's concerns and confirmed that authorities would take steps to install a respectful and dignified statue of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj at the junction.

The removal of the controversial installation has brought the immediate dispute to an end. The civic administration is expected to take up the formal process for the proposed installation of the new statue in the coming period.
