PMC Proposes 20 Recreation Centres For Senior Citizens In Navi Mumbai
The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed the establishment of 20 recreation centres for senior citizens across its jurisdiction in Navi Mumbai, including Kalamboli, Kharghar, New Panvel, Kamothe, Panvel, Khanda Colony, and Navade. The proposal, which aims to provide dedicated and safe community spaces for elderly residents to socialize and access wellness activities, is scheduled to be placed for approval before the corporation's general body meeting on July 22.
According to civic officials, the initiative is designed to enable senior citizens to spend quality time in an engaging environment while encouraging them to remain socially active. The centres will serve as spaces where elderly residents can meet, participate in recreational activities, and attend wellness programmes.
Under the proposed plan, the 20 recreation centres will be distributed across different nodes of the city. Kalamboli is set to have six centres, followed by Kharghar with five, New Panvel with three, and Kamothe with two. Meanwhile, Panvel, Khanda Colony, and Navade will each have one dedicated centre.
Several of these proposed facilities are already housed in structures that were built earlier by CIDCO. The municipal corporation plans to task its engineering department with undertaking the necessary repairs, renovation, and beautification of these existing buildings before making them fully operational.
Each recreation centre will be equipped with basic amenities to ensure comfort, including clean drinking water and toilets. Additionally, the facilities will feature libraries, newspapers, and indoor games such as carrom and chess. The civic body also plans to organize regular health check-up camps, yoga sessions, and wellness programmes for the senior citizens at these locations.
Officials stated that the first phase of the project is expected to be completed within six months after receiving official approval from the general body.
To ensure effective management, the civic body will first conduct a survey of senior citizens in the respective areas. Once the centres are operational, the PMC proposes to hand over the day-to-day management and maintenance of the facilities to local senior citizens' groups.
