Police Detain Protesters and Register Cases After Dadar CJP Demonstrations
On Monday, July 20, 2026, Mumbai Police detained several protesters and used force to disperse an unauthorized demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar. The protest, held in support of an ongoing agitation in Delhi, went ahead for a second consecutive day despite police denying permission.
A large number of students, activists, and supporters gathered at Chaityabhoomi, the memorial of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Members of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) also joined the demonstration. Police officials declared the gathering unauthorized and attempted to clear the area, resorting to force in some spots and taking several students, women, and activists into custody.
During the Monday protest, a woman who arrived with her child to support the agitation alleged that police refused to let them stand near the memorial. After she spoke to the media, police personnel detained her, leaving her accompanying child crying.
The action followed a similar unauthorized gathering on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at Shivaji Park in Dadar, which was attended by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. Mumbai Police have registered three separate cases against the organizers at the Shivaji Park police station.
According to police sources, the first case relates to organizing an unauthorized meeting and protest at the Shivaji Park ground. The second case concerns encouraging students and the public to gather at the venue despite being denied permission. The third case was filed because protesters refused to vacate the ground after the meeting, staging demonstrations across Dadar that caused major traffic disruptions.
Following the Sunday meeting, the Riot Control Police unit was deployed to Shivaji Park after students and protesters refused to leave despite repeated loudspeaker announcements. Protesters were also detained at Azad Maidan.
While police warned organizers that further unauthorized demonstrations would face legal action, no arrests have been officially made.
