Police track down transgender duo for assaulting passenger on Mahim-Bandra local train
The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Monday tracked down two transgender individuals who were filmed assaulting a male passenger inside a Western Railway local train running between Mahim and Bandra stations. The police action followed the online circulation of a viral video clip that captured the physical altercation.
According to the police, the incident took place recently in a general compartment of the local train. The two transgender individuals, consisting of one adult and one minor, were begging inside the train compartments.
During their rounds, they approached an unidentified male passenger and demanded money from him. The man refused to give them any money. He argued that other people had already taken money from him earlier that same day. This refusal sparked an argument between the passenger and the two individuals.
The verbal altercation quickly escalated into physical violence. The two transgender individuals began raining kicks and blows on the passenger inside the general compartment. A co-passenger who witnessed the assault filmed the entire incident on their phone.
The recorded video was subsequently posted online, where it went viral and eventually caught the attention of the railway police. Following this, the GRP initiated an effort to locate the suspects.
On Monday, police officers successfully tracked down the two individuals and brought them to the Mumbai Central GRP chowky for questioning.
The police have registered a non-cognisable complaint against the adult transgender individual. Authorities also confirmed that preventive action will be taken against the adult in connection with the incident.
The second individual, who is a minor, was released by the police. Officers sent the minor back to their guru after administering a formal warning.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (GRP) Pradnya Jedge confirmed the police action on the matter. "We registered a non-cognisable complaint against one of them and will take preventive action," DCP Jedge said.
