Praful Patel Dismisses Legal Challenge to Sunetra Pawar's NCP Appointment

On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Praful Patel dismissed a legal challenge that questioned the validity of Sunetra Pawar's appointment as the party's national president during a press interaction in Mumbai. Speaking to reporters, Patel asserted that the election of Sunetra Pawar to the party's top post was conducted in strict accordance with the established constitution of the political party.
The political development in Mumbai follows a formal legal challenge initiated by former NCP National Secretary Sachidanand Singh. Singh served a legal notice to the party, directly questioning the validity of Sunetra Pawar's appointment to the top organisational post. In the legal notice, the former National Secretary also demanded that a fresh election be conducted to select the party's national president to resolve the dispute.
The legal notice served by Singh has fueled significant speculation regarding potential internal rifts, differences, and divisions within the senior leadership of the NCP. However, Patel firmly rejected any suggestions that the legal challenge reflected any ongoing division or conflict within the party's current leadership. He maintained that the party's internal processes were fully valid.
While responding to questions from reporters in Mumbai, Patel clarified his position and stated that he had no personal connection with the legal notice filed by the former National Secretary. He reiterated that the party's internal election processes were fully compliant with the NCP constitution and did not violate any of its rules.
The statements from the Rajya Sabha MP were aimed at addressing the mounting speculation surrounding the party's internal dynamics. Patel's dismissal of the challenge reinforces the party leadership's official position that Sunetra Pawar's appointment as the national president remains entirely valid, despite the objections raised in the legal notice by Sachidanand Singh, who is seeking a fresh election.
