Pre-Monsoon Showers Hit Thane, Triggering Power Cuts in Anand Nagar

Pre-monsoon showers hit Thane city on Sunday morning, bringing 2mm of rainfall and causing power outages in areas like Anand Nagar along the Ghodbunder highway, while offering residents temporary relief from the hot and humid weather.

Thane city received the 2mm of rainfall over a span of two hours starting at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Although municipal authorities received no reports of waterlogging or fallen trees during the intermittent showers, the rain disrupted local power services. Residents in several parts of the city, particularly in Anand Nagar along the Ghodbunder highway, complained of electricity cuts lasting between 30 minutes and two hours.

In addition to Thane city, other areas within Thane district also recorded light rainfall on Sunday. These included Titwala, Bhiwandi, Shahapur, Murbad, and Badlapur.

Meanwhile, the neighboring region of Navi Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 2.68mm between 6:45 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Belapur recorded the highest rainfall in that area at 7.9mm, followed by Vashi at 3.6mm, Nerul at 3.3mm, and Digha at 1.3mm. Nearby areas like Koparkhairane, Ghansoli, and Airoli remained mostly dry, experiencing only brief drizzles.

Parts of Mumbai also received brief pre-monsoon showers on Sunday morning. In the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, the IMD Colaba observatory recorded 6.8mm of rain, while the Santacruz observatory recorded 2mm. Automatic weather stations in Mumbai showed that between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., Worli received 25mm of rain, Ghatkopar received 24mm, Lower Parel recorded 21mm, Chembur saw 20mm, and Mankhurd recorded 16mm.

The showers brought down temperatures across the region, offering relief from a week of hot and humid weather caused by a stalled monsoon. Minimum temperatures at the IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatories dropped to 25.8 degrees Celsius and 26.7 degrees Celsius respectively, down from 28.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, and Palghar until Wednesday, warning of potential thunderstorms and lightning. The IMD stated that conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into Maharashtra around June 23, with isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds of up to 60 kmph expected in the Konkan region between June 22 and June 25.
