Rahul Narwekar Orders Security Boost for Mumbai Local Trains After Passenger Murder

Following the broad daylight murder of a 22-year-old passenger on a moving train, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar has directed the Mahayuti government to provide security to Mumbai's local trains. The directive, issued in the state assembly a day after the killing of Mayank Lohar, also ordered the government to make a formal statement on the issue before the legislature on Monday.
The issue of transit safety on Mumbai's suburban rail network was raised in the assembly by Congress leader Nana Patole, who expressed deep shock over the incident. Patole questioned the current safety measures and demanded a dedicated discussion on the floor of the house.
Speaking in the assembly, Narwekar emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that thousands of commuters rely on Mumbai's local trains daily. He stated that a broad daylight murder on a moving train is a very serious issue that requires immediate attention.
While acknowledging that railway platforms are monitored by the railway authorities, Narwekar pointed out that the state government holds the ultimate responsibility for maintaining law and order. He noted that there is an IPS officer in charge of these security operations, yet such an unfortunate incident still occurred on the transit system.
Patole shared his firsthand observations of train station security during a morning visit, criticizing the existing screening processes. He stated that he visited a train station and found the security scanning was just an eyewash. He reminded the assembly of the city's history, referencing the 26/11 terror strike.
"This incident has shocked the whole country," Patole said during the session. "Don't people have a right to live?"
Addressing Narwekar directly, Patole urged the Speaker to schedule a legislative debate. He noted that Narwekar is also from Mumbai and argued that the assembly must hold a discussion on the safety of the city's commuters.
