Railway Ministry Scraps Tender for 238 Mumbai AC Local Trains

The Railway Ministry on Wednesday cancelled the long-delayed tender for 238 AC local train rakes in Mumbai, shifting the project to direct manufacturing across three state-owned facilities to expedite delivery to the city.

The scrapped tender was originally floated by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) for the procurement of air-conditioned local trains for Mumbai.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the 238 rakes will now be manufactured simultaneously across three railway production units.

These manufacturing facilities include the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, and the Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Rae Bareli.

By distributing production simultaneously across ICF Chennai, RCF Kapurthala, and MCF Rae Bareli, the ministry intends to fast-track deliveries to Mumbai.

Under the revised schedule, the Railway Ministry targets the first batch of new AC local trains to enter passenger service by 2027.

The entire fleet of 238 AC local train rakes is slated for full delivery to Mumbai by 2030.
