Railways Intervenes to Preserve Historic GIPR Relics at Sion Station

The Indian Railways intervened on Sunday to preserve surviving relics of the historic Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) located at Sion station.

The GIPR holds a significant place in Indian railway history, having operated the country's first commercial passenger railway service between Bombay and Thane in 1853.

Speaking on Sunday, a senior railway official confirmed that specific instructions have been issued to the zonal railway authorities to salvage and protect several historic artefacts from the site.

Among the items slated for preservation are old iron brackets and various other surviving GIPR relics found at the old Sion railway station structure.

According to railway officials, the preserved artefacts will be safeguarded and prepared for public display at a heritage gallery as well as the National Rail Museum.

The intervention ensures that physical remnants connected to the earliest railway operations between Bombay and Thane are retained and curated for historical preservation.
