Rain and Waterlogging Trigger Massive Traffic Jams on Thane-Bhiwandi Bypass

Severe traffic congestion paralyzed the Thane–Bhiwandi bypass and the Sion–Panvel Highway near Juinagar on Tuesday, as monsoon rains and waterlogging triggered massive delays for daily commuters. Both carriageways of the nine-lane Thane–Bhiwandi bypass were completely packed, while waterlogging near the Juinagar railway station in Navi Mumbai caused traffic backlogs stretching up to three kilometres.
The traffic disruptions caused widespread frustration among daily commuters traveling between Thane, Kalyan, and Bhiwandi. Many commuters took to social media to voice their concerns, with some questioning if ongoing metro construction work contributed to the gridlock. Several others expressed their anger, stating that commuters face the exact same traffic situation every single day.
The traffic map shared by Mumbai Nowcast on Tuesday showed the highway lanes marked in red, indicating severe gridlock. Despite the highway having nine lanes, both carriageways were completely packed with vehicles.
The onset of the monsoon in the region worsened traffic conditions. Light to moderate rainfall lashed several parts of the city starting early Tuesday morning. The heavy downpour led to severe waterlogging on the Sion–Panvel Highway near Juinagar railway station, forcing vehicles heading towards Mumbai to move at a slow pace. The congestion stretched nearly two to three kilometres, significantly affecting overall vehicular movement.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the region is likely to witness further rain or thundershowers later in the afternoon and evening. The weather department also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph during the day.
As rain continues to lash parts of the city, a yellow alert remains in place until July 2. Authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious due to unstable weather conditions and the possibility of intense spells of rainfall.
