Sachin Ahir elected unopposed as Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairman

On Wednesday, Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Sachin Ahir was elected unopposed as the 11th Deputy Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. His election was secured after the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition withdrew its candidate, J M Abhyankar, resolving a potential political conflict.
The development came just one day after Ahir switched political sides, leaving the Shiv Sena (UBT) to join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Following his defection on Tuesday, Sena (UBT) leaders had threatened legal action against him. While the opposition initially fielded Abhyankar for the post, they withdrew his candidature on Wednesday morning, paving the way for a consensus.
Congratulating Ahir in the House, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised the unanimous decision. Fadnavis stated that the unopposed election represents a victory for the democratic traditions of the House, noting that all parties worked together to ensure a consensus. He highlighted Ahir's long legislative career, which includes past service as an MLA, Minister of State, and MLC.
Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde also welcomed the appointment, stating that Ahir's extensive experience in legislative functioning would benefit the entire House.
Speaking after his election, Ahir expressed his commitment to serving all members of the council equally. He stated that he would work without discrimination and ensure equal justice to every member. Ahir dedicated his election to ordinary citizens, calling it an honor for common workers and the labor movement. He also referenced late Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray and late Anand Dighe, reaffirming his dedication to the public.
Ahir’s transition has raised questions about whether he will face disqualification proceedings under anti-defection provisions. A similar situation occurred in July 2023 when senior Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe quit the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction to join the Shinde-led Shiv Sena while continuing as Deputy Chairperson, and no disqualification proceedings were initiated against her.
Ahir’s political shift marks another major setback for the Uddhav Thackeray camp, following the recent departure of six Sena (UBT) Lok Sabha MPs who also joined the Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
