Sakinaka Landslide Search Enters Day Two as Seven Dead and Two Trapped

Search and rescue teams continued operations for a second consecutive day on Thursday, August 13, 2026, following a fatal landslide in the Sakinaka area of Mumbai. Emergency responders are searching through debris where two persons remain feared trapped after heavy rains triggered the disaster.

The landslide occurred during the early hours of Wednesday, August 12, 2026, when soil and heavy boulders loosened from an adjoining hillock and crashed onto three shanties in Gaushiya Chawl, located within the Ashok Nagar locality of Chirag Nagar. The row tenement structure suffered severe damage, claiming seven lives and leaving seven other residents injured.

A joint rescue force comprising personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the fire brigade, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been working at the site. However, civic officials stated that the search operations have faced significant operational challenges. The narrow access routes leading into the locality have prevented emergency teams from bringing in heavy machinery, forcing rescuers to navigate the heavy rubble under restricted conditions.

In response to safety concerns, civic authorities evacuated residents living in neighboring shanties adjoining the impacted zone. The civic administration has established arrangements to provide temporary accommodation for the displaced families.

The BMC noted that it had been issuing safety warnings and conducting public awareness drives in areas vulnerable to landslides and rockfalls, particularly during the monsoon season. Search efforts at the Sakinaka site remain ongoing as teams attempt to locate the missing residents.
