Satara Doctor Dies in Sion Hospital After Suicide Attempt Near Railway Station
A medical officer from Satara district died during treatment at Sion Hospital in Mumbai on Monday, days after he allegedly attempted suicide by hanging himself from a mobile tower located near Sion railway station.
The deceased, identified as Dr Rajendra Rupnavar, worked at the Phaltan Sub-District Hospital in Satara district. According to preliminary information, Rupnavar climbed the mobile tower near the railway station on August 27 in an attempt to end his life. He was subsequently rescued and rushed to Sion Hospital for medical care, where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
Rupnavar was reportedly under severe distress over internal workplace disputes at the Phaltan facility and matters concerning his transfer. It is alleged that he had previously attempted suicide after writing a note on his hand, which stated that he was not receiving justice and that the administration had failed to take action regarding his grievances.
The Dadar Government Railway Police (GRP) are in the process of registering a case concerning the incident. Police officials are expected to look into the circumstances leading up to the suicide attempt and examine whether any external factors contributed to his mental distress.
Following his death, the Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and BMC MARD called for an independent, time-bound inquiry into allegations of workplace harassment as well as external and political pressure. Central MARD stated that an impartial and transparent probe must establish the facts, demanding action against anyone found responsible for intimidation or coercion, alongside stronger institutional mechanisms to safeguard medical professionals.
BMC MARD also urged authorities to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into allegations of threats and inappropriate interference with medical duties. The doctors' organisations noted that this was reportedly the second tragedy involving a doctor connected with the Phaltan hospital. Both bodies expressed their condolences to Rupnavar's family and called on the Maharashtra government to ensure accountability if wrongdoing is found.
