Seawoods Teenager Critical After NMMC Truck Crash, Family Seeks CM Relief Fund

An 18-year-old girl remains in critical condition on ventilator support after a Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) garbage truck allegedly rammed into the scooter she was riding near Parsik Hill in CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai. The accident, which occurred on June 28, 2026, at approximately 9:35 AM, has prompted her family to appeal to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for financial assistance from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund as medical expenses rise.

The victim, Shreya Firke, a resident of Seawoods, was riding pillion on a scooter driven by her friend, Soham Devendra Golatkar of Kharghar. The two had participated in a morning run organised by the Genesis Run Club at Parsik Hill. According to the police complaint filed by fellow club member Sarthak Santosh Gaikwad, the group was heading to Nerul for breakfast after completing their run.

While Shreya and Soham were riding ahead, an NMMC garbage transport vehicle allegedly driven in a rash and negligent manner collided head-on with their scooter. The impact threw both riders onto the road. Shreya sustained grievous injuries to her abdomen, left arm, face, and other body parts, while Soham suffered serious head and shoulder injuries. Fellow runners rushed them to Apollo Hospital in CBD Belapur.

The unidentified truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash without assisting the victims or informing the police. A police case has been registered against the driver for rash and negligent driving and leaving the accident spot.

Shreya's father, Nilesh Firke, stated in his letter to the Chief Minister that his daughter has been in the intensive care unit (ICU) for two weeks. The hospital bill has already exceeded Rs 18 lakh, and doctors estimate the final cost of surgeries and treatment could reach nearly Rs 40 lakh. Firke stated that as an ordinary citizen, arranging such a large sum is beyond his financial capacity.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has criticized the civic body. MNS Navi Mumbai city president Gajanan Kale visited the family and alleged that no senior NMMC officials had visited them. Kale demanded that the civic administration recover the entire treatment cost from the contractor responsible for operating the garbage vehicle, warning of aggressive agitation if they fail to do so.
