Severe Monsoon Floods Borivali as Commuters Turn to Emergency Apps to Navigate Delays

Severe monsoon rains have inundated Mumbai, causing widespread flooding, waterlogged roads, and major transit delays for commuters at busy hubs like Borivali. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting continued heavy rainfall through the upcoming weekend, local authorities and disaster management agencies are recommending the use of specialized mobile applications to help residents navigate the ongoing weather crisis safely.
The persistent downpours have disrupted daily life across the city, leading to delayed train services and gridlocked roads. At busy stations like Borivali, passengers are facing unpredictable delays and waterlogged tracks. To manage the disruptions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other agencies are highlighting digital tools designed to provide real-time updates.
The BMC’s official 'Disaster Management BMC' app is offering push notifications for citizen alerts, railway delays, and running status updates for the Metro, Monorail, and BEST buses. The app also features an emergency SOS facility and provides location details for the nearest temporary shelters, flooding spots, and police stations.
For local train commuters in Borivali, the 'm-Indicator' app is being widely used to track live train movements, platform numbers, and door positions. The app includes a train chat feature that allows passengers to exchange real-time information on delays and cancellations, alongside a women's safety feature that sends automatic alert SMS messages even without an active internet connection.
Additionally, residents are utilizing the National Disaster Management Authority's 'Sachet' app for geo-tagged alerts, and the Central Water Commission’s 'FloodWatch India' app, which provides flood forecasts up to seven days in advance. IIT Bombay’s 'Mumbai Flood' portal is also online, offering hourly rainfall predictions and live water-level data from flood-prone areas to help commuters avoid stranded routes.
