SGNP Seeks Unrelated Lions and Tigers from Other Zoos to Tackle Inbreeding

Authorities at Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai are moving to bring in captive lions and tigers from facilities outside Maharashtra to address growing inbreeding concerns within the safari population.

Park officials are actively looking for mates for the resident female felines as the current gene pool continues to shrink. Because several of the big cats currently housed in the park are closely related to one another, captive breeding options have become severely constrained.

To overcome these limitations, park management is scouting zoos and animal rescue facilities across other states to source unrelated male lions and tigers.

The initiative is designed to introduce genetic diversity, strengthen the health of future generations, and help increase the overall captive feline population at the national park's safari.
