Shia Mourners Gather at Mazgaon Graveyard to Mark Shaam-e-Gharibaan

Hundreds of Shia mourners gathered at the Rahmatabad Shia graveyard in Mazgaon, Mumbai, on Friday evening to observe Shaam-e-Gharibaan. The solemn congregation met to collectively lament the Karbala tragedy and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions, following the conclusion of Ashura, the 10th of Moharram.
The assembly at the sprawling Mazgaon cemetery marked the "evening of the poor and oppressed" majlis. The event took place after a day of processions, prayers, and public mourning for the martyrs of Karbala had concluded. It provided a solemn occasion for piety, remembrance, and communal mourning over the historical suffering, cruelty, and destruction faced by the Prophet Muhammad's family.
The congregation is held to commemorate the dark and dreadful evening at Karbala. This historical event followed a day that saw the bloodbath of men and children, the burning and destruction of the tents of Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hussain, and his companions, and the humiliation of women from the Prophet's household by the army of the autocratic ruler Yazid.
Senior cleric Maulana Yasoob Abbas from Lucknow addressed the gathered mourners at the graveyard. He reflected on the historical tragedy and the suffering of the Prophet's family.
"It was a sad evening," Abbas said. "The chilling cruelty of Yazid's army at his behest on Imam Hussain and his companions had sent shock waves. Imam Hussain's sister Hazrat Zainab was at a loss as she had witnessed how the holy Prophet's family had suffered. The evening is to remember those horrific moments lament for the unfathomable loss."
Maulana Yasoob Abbas spent the initial 10 days of Moharram in Mumbai. During his stay in the city, the senior cleric addressed various Moharram majlises at different locations before the Friday evening congregation in Mazgaon.
