Shree Thaker Bhojanalay Temporarily Closes for Upgrades, Denies Hygiene Rumours
Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, an 81-year-old eatery located in Fanaswadi, Kalbadevi, has temporarily shut its doors for planned kitchen upgrades and repairs. The management issued a clarification to refute circulating rumours that the iconic restaurant was forced to close due to hygiene or food safety violations during recent government crackdowns in Mumbai.
The closure had sparked debate and speculation over potential hygiene concerns. The news emerged alongside an ongoing enforcement drive by IAS officer and Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Chief Tukaram Mundhe against several popular eateries in the state over unhygienic conditions. The FDA crackdowns recently led to the suspension of licenses of several famous Mumbai dining spots, including K Rustom Ice Cream, Noor Mohammadi Hotel, Shalimar, and Rehmania Restaurant.
Putting an end to the claims, Shree Thaker Bhojanalay addressed the issue directly in a public statement released on its official Instagram handle. The management clarified that the reports suggesting administrative action were entirely unfounded.
"We've seen some reports and comments suggesting that Shree Thaker Bhojanalay has been shut down due to hygiene or food-safety violations. This is not true," the restaurant stated in its official post.
Reassuring customers about its hygiene standards and the temporary nature of the closure, the establishment explained that regular operations had to be paused to accommodate essential maintenance.
"Our temporary closure is entirely for planned kitchen upgrades, repairs and some paint touch-ups," the statement read. "As the kitchen is being upgraded, we cannot continue regular operations during this work."
The restaurant expressed gratitude to its patrons and confirmed plans to resume service in the near future once the work is finalized.
"Thank you to everyone who has supported us and continues to believe in us," the statement concluded. "We'll be back soon with the same flavours, same tradition and the same Thaker you love. We simply wanted to take a short pause to refresh and improve our space, not because we were forced to close."
Established in 1945 by Manganlal Purohit, Shree Thaker Bhojanalay has operated as a culinary landmark in Kalbadevi for decades. Famous for serving authentic Rajasthani and traditional Gujarati thalis with a diverse range of food offerings, the historic establishment remains popular among celebrities and long-time patrons across the city.
