Sion Hospital Birth Registration Backlog Leaves Hundreds of Mumbai Families Waiting

Hundreds of families in Mumbai are facing severe delays in obtaining official birth certificates for their newborns due to a significant registration backlog at Sion Hospital. As of June 27, 2026, approximately 400 birth registration entries remain pending at the medical facility, leaving parents waiting for months to receive the necessary documentation from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The ongoing delays have impacted families with children born since at least January 2026. The administrative bottleneck has occurred because Sion Hospital has failed to forward the official records of newborn deliveries to the BMC, which is the civic body responsible for finalizing the registrations and issuing the certificates.
Among the affected parents is Janardan Meher, whose daughter was born at Sion Hospital in January 2026. The birth of his daughter was a momentous occasion for the family, arriving after 13 years of marriage. However, six months after the delivery, Meher and his family are still waiting for the official birth certificate. While the hospital issued a temporary birth card to Meher at the time of the birth, the official registration remains incomplete because the hospital has not transferred the records to the BMC.
Numerous families of newborns have raised serious concerns over these persistent delays. The lack of official birth certificates presents a significant challenge for parents who require the documents for official purposes. Sources indicate that the hospital currently has around 400 pending entries that have yet to be processed and sent to the civic administration.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation cannot proceed with issuing the certificates until Sion Hospital resolves the internal backlog and forwards the pending registration data. As a result, hundreds of families continue to wait for the hospital to address the administrative delay.
