Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital hosts 30-hour organ transplant marathon

Healthcare teams at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai successfully completed a 30-hour continuous organ transplant marathon on June 26, saving the lives of six critically ill patients. The massive medical effort was made possible by the families of two deceased women who donated their organs, triggering a coordinated logistics operation that stretched across multiple cities.

The first donor was a 39-year-old woman who was declared brain dead after suffering severe traumatic brain injuries in a road traffic accident. At Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, her bilateral lungs were transplanted into a 59-year-old man on VV-ECMO support under the supra-urgent category. Her liver was transplanted into a 46-year-old woman, and one kidney was given to a 56-year-old woman.

Additionally, her heart was allocated to the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology in Ahmedabad, her other kidney was shared with Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai, and both of her corneas were donated to restore sight to two individuals.

The second donor was a 59-year-old woman who was declared brain dead following a left intraparenchymal haemorrhage. Her liver was transplanted into a 44-year-old woman and one kidney was transplanted into a 60-year-old man at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital. Her second kidney was sent to Apollo Hospital in Navi Mumbai, and her corneas were donated through the EBCRC Eye Bank in Mumbai.

In total, Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital conducted five transplant surgeries involving six organs, including bilateral lungs, two livers, and two kidneys.

Dr Tarang Gianchandani, Group CEO – Healthcare Initiatives and CEO of Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, credited the milestone to the generosity of the donor families and the coordinated efforts of the hospital's multidisciplinary teams.

Dr Gianchandani also thanked the Dean of JJ Hospital for supporting the retrieval and allocation process. He expressed gratitude to Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti and the Mumbai Police for facilitating green corridors that ensured the swift transport of the organs.

With these two donations, Mumbai recorded its 31st and 32nd deceased organ donations of 2026.
