Supriya Sule Leads Protest Near CSMT Against Rising Commodity Prices

Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MP Supriya Sule led a demonstration near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai on Wednesday to protest against rising inflation and the escalating prices of essential commodities.

Party workers gathered at the site, raising slogans against the government over the increasing costs of household necessities, including milk, wheat, rice, sugar, vegetables, and grains. During the demonstration, some protesters purchased essential commodities directly at the venue to draw attention to the financial strain on households.

Addressing the gathering, Sule questioned how working-class and middle-class citizens could manage living costs amid high food inflation and taxation. She noted that with only eight days remaining before the Ganesh festival, followed by subsequent festive occasions, price increases would severely affect families trying to celebrate while meeting tax obligations.

Sule stated that inflation was severely affecting rural communities as well as urban households. She highlighted the plight of farmers who continue to face mounting debts, noting that incidents of farmer suicides were still being reported despite official announcements regarding loan waivers.

Sule also questioned the central government's assessment of national economic growth and GDP figures, asserting that experts and former governors held a different view of the ground reality.

The demonstration occurred amid reported price increases across milk, LPG cylinders, and auto-rickshaw and taxi fares starting from September 1, raising broader concerns for low- and middle-income families across the city. Police personnel maintained heavy security deployment around the CSMT protest site to monitor the situation and oversee law and order.
