Supriya Sule Urges Centre Not to Block Legitimate Donations in FCRA Bill
NCP (SP) Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule on Friday urged the central government to ensure that legitimate overseas donations intended for educational, social, and healthcare organisations are not obstructed under the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026.
Speaking in Mumbai, Sule stated that the government should avoid rushing through the proposed legislation. She emphasised the need for broad-based consensus, demanding that all political parties be taken into confidence regarding the provisions of the bill.
The development comes after the Lok Sabha sent the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, to a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) following widespread objections in the House.
The decision to refer the legislation to the parliamentary panel occurred amid sustained protests by opposition parties. Members of the opposition raised serious concerns over the proposed amendments, alleging that the legislation targets minorities and non-governmental organisations. Opposition groups had actively demanded the withdrawal of the draft law before it was forwarded to the committee for further review.
Sule maintained that while regulatory oversight is debated, critical funding avenues supporting welfare, social initiatives, healthcare, and educational institutions must remain protected from unnecessary obstructions.
The 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee is set to deliberate on the FCRA Bill, 2026, following the demands raised by opposition parties for thorough scrutiny of its provisions.
