Tanker Overturns and Crushes Auto-Rickshaw on Ghodbunder Road, Four Critically Injured

A heavy chemical tanker lost control and overturned onto a moving auto-rickshaw in the Patlipada area, close to the Kasarvadavali stretch on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The catastrophic accident, which occurred at approximately 12:00 PM, resulted in reported fatalities, left four people critically injured, and caused a massive traffic gridlock on the major thoroughfare.
According to preliminary reports from the local traffic police, the massive chemical tanker was heading towards Ghodbunder when the driver suddenly lost steering control of the vehicle. The heavy vehicle destabilised and capsized onto its side, completely crushing the moving auto-rickshaw that was travelling alongside it. The impact of the heavy tanker was so severe that the auto-rickshaw was completely destroyed and reduced to a mangled heap of metal.
A major emergency rescue operation was launched immediately following the crash. Personnel from the Kasarvadavali Police Station, the local traffic branch, and emergency disaster management teams all rushed to the accident site immediately to coordinate the multi-agency rescue and cleanup operation.
To extract the victims, emergency responders deployed giant cranes to lift the heavy overturned chemical tanker and clear the wreckage. Initial assessments from the scene indicated that there were fatalities among the passengers of the auto-rickshaw. Four other individuals suffered critical injuries in the collision and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The accident caused a massive traffic gridlock on Ghodbunder Road, which is a vital road artery connecting Thane, Mumbai, and Gujarat. Authorities spent several hours diverting vehicles and managing the crowd of onlookers to restore normal traffic flow on the route.
An official investigation has been launched by the local police to determine the exact cause of the crash. Investigators are working to verify whether vehicular overspeeding or a mechanical failure led to the tragedy.
