Tansa and Modak Sagar Overflow in Thane as Total Water Stock Reaches 92 Per Cent

Water levels across the seven key supplying lakes reached 92 per cent on Saturday, August 15, 2026, boosted by recent rainfall that caused reservoirs including Tansa and Modak Sagar in Thane district to overflow.

The rise to 92 per cent comes after storage levels remained steady at approximately 88 per cent for nearly three weeks. The collective water stock across the network now holds sufficient supply to meet requirements for approximately 323 days.

As of August 15, the combined water volume in the seven reservoirs stood at approximately 13.24 lakh million litres against total storage capacity. By comparison, storage during the same period last year was recorded at 12.95 lakh million litres, while in 2024 the stock was higher at 13.48 lakh million litres.

Four of the major supplying lakes have now breached overflowing marks following the recent wet spell. In Thane district, both Tansa and Modak Sagar are overflowing. Within Mumbai, the smaller reservoirs of Vehar and Tulsi have also reached overflowing levels.

Despite the significant influx of water, total storage remains below the target needed to guarantee an entire year of uninterrupted supply. Civic requirements dictate that the lake system must hold around 14.47 lakh million litres by October 1 to cover full annual consumption.

Weather concerns persist regarding rainfall activity across the remaining months of the monsoon season. With the El Niño phenomenon expected to affect rainfall patterns during August and September, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has maintained the 10 per cent water cut that has been in place since May 15 as a precautionary measure.
