Tardeo Agent Apologises After Vegetarian Only Listing Sparks Backlash

A ₹6.5 crore apartment listing in Mumbai’s Tardeo neighbourhood has sparked widespread debate and criticism after a promotional video declared that only vegetarians could buy or reside in the building. The condition placed on the property led to online backlash over housing discrimination based on dietary habits.

The 2BHK flat in South Mumbai spans approximately 900 square feet of carpet area. It features an attached balcony offering panoramic views of the city and the sea, along with dedicated surface or podium parking. Following intense criticism on social media over the exclusion of non-vegetarian buyers, the original listing video was deleted.

Shinde Sena youth leader Gurjyot Singh Keer was among those who publicly condemned the restriction, questioning whether food preferences should dictate who can purchase or occupy a home. The pushback prompted real estate agent Bhavesh Kaware to issue an apology and clarify the context of the listing video.

Kaware explained that the restriction was set by the flat owner rather than himself. He noted that the owners are Warkaris and vegetarians who chose not to sell to non-vegetarians due to personal or religious reasons. Kaware maintained his video was misinterpreted, stating that he avoided mentioning non-vegetarian dishes out of respect for Shravan and did not intend to offend anyone.

Responding to Keer, whom he referred to as a "Parprantiya" (migrant), Kaware stated that vegetarianism is practiced by several Maharashtrian communities, including Malkaris, Warkaris, and Brahmins. While Kaware repeated his apology for hurting sentiments, the controversy comes amid wider discussions in Mumbai regarding property owners and housing societies restricting residents based on food choices, religion, or community.
