TBM Parts for Mumbai Coastal Road North to Arrive in December 2026

Components of the first tunnel boring machine for the Mumbai Coastal Road (North) project are scheduled to arrive in December 2026, setting the stage for underground excavation work on a 3.9-kilometre tunnel at Charkop. Following the delivery, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation plans to assemble the heavy machinery over the subsequent two months before starting tunnel boring operations.

The update comes as the civic body accelerates development on the northern corridor, which is designed to connect Versova directly with Bhayander. Once fully operational, the infrastructure project is expected to slash vehicular travel time between Versova and Bhayander from the current 90 to 120 minutes down to around 15 to 20 minutes.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the ongoing ground works under Packages C and D of the project. During the site visit, Bangar directed project engineers and officials to maintain high construction quality while ensuring all works are completed within the designated deadlines.

Under Package C, contractors will build a 3.9-kilometre northbound tunnel stretching between Mindspace in Malad and Charkop Creek. Package D will mirror this alignment with a 3.9-kilometre southbound twin tunnel connecting Charkop Creek back to Mindspace in Malad. The twin tunnels will have a diameter of around 15 metres.

The entire mega infrastructure initiative has been split into seven operational packages: Packages A, B, C, D, E, and F, alongside the Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road. Across its alignment, the comprehensive project features double elevated roads, road stretches built on stilts through sensitive mangrove zones, two cable-stayed bridges, four regular bridges, two twin tunnels, and 10 traffic interchanges.
