Tension in Mumbai's Mazgaon After Eggs Thrown at Ganpati Procession
Tension erupted in Mumbai's Mazgaon late Sunday night after eggs were allegedly thrown from a nearby building at the arrival procession of the Mazgaon Cha Morya Ganpati idol. The incident triggered a gathering of local residents and devotees, resulting in heated arguments before police personnel reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
According to Vivek Rana, deputy secretary of the Ganpati mandal, the incident took place when the idol's arrival procession was passing roughly 30 to 40 metres from the pandal. Rana alleged that the eggs were thrown from a nearby building and termed the incident objectionable, demanding strict action against those responsible.
Hitesh Chandrakant Jadhav, president of the Akhil Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti Maharashtra, said an egg allegedly came from a housing society and broke near the trolley carrying the Ganesh idol. The incident led to a rise in tension and the arrival of a large number of Ganesh devotees in the Mazgaon area. Jadhav noted that members from organisations including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal also arrived at the spot to extend support to the Ganpati mandal.
Senior police officer Jayant Meena rushed to the spot to pacify the crowd as tensions escalated. In a video from the scene, Meena urged the assembled crowd not to raise slogans or create disturbances, asking people to trust the police and allow the law to take its course.
Police officials confirmed that an FIR has been registered against unidentified persons following directions from the Mumbai Police Commissioner. Jadhav stated that police registered a non-bailable offence against the unidentified suspects and assured the crowd that efforts would be made to identify the accused within 24 hours.
Authorities are now examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and nearby housing structures to trace and identify the individuals involved. Jadhav appealed to devotees and local Ganesh mandals to remain calm and await updates through official mandal communication channels.
