Thane Among 11 Maharashtra Districts Selected for Zero Fatality Road Safety Drive

Thane has been selected as one of 11 accident-prone districts across Maharashtra for targeted road safety interventions under the Centre's Zero Fatality District programme.

The initiative signals an intensified push to curb road crash deaths through improved traffic enforcement, structural road safety improvements, and rapid emergency medical response. The selected districts account for a significant share of total road fatalities in the state.

The comprehensive roadmap was presented by the Maharashtra state transport department during the Third Regional Manthan Workshop held in Mumbai this week. The workshop was organised by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and chaired by Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre (Retd), Chairman of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety.

Along with Thane, the other districts identified for focused action are Pune, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Nagpur, Solapur, Satara, Kolhapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nanded, and Amravati.

According to road safety officials, the strategy moves beyond routine traffic enforcement to address the full spectrum of accident prevention and post-crash care. A primary focus will be the identification and engineering correction of hazardous road stretches.

As part of these efforts, Maharashtra has already mapped more than 600 accident black spots across its highway and road network where collisions occur repeatedly. Authorities also noted that specific measures are being introduced to reinforce emergency medical response during the critical golden hour immediately following a crash to save lives.
