Thane Depot Selected as Key Maintenance Hub for Bullet Train Project
Thane is set to house a critical rolling-stock maintenance depot under the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, forming a three-facility network across Maharashtra and Gujarat to service high-speed trainsets once operations commence.
The Thane depot, alongside facilities in Surat and Sabarmati, will support the 508-km high-speed rail corridor by handling regular train inspections, overhauls, and repairs without disrupting operational schedules. The inclusion of Thane provides crucial maintenance infrastructure near Mumbai, which serves as the southern terminal of the bullet train corridor.
According to project plans, the distributed three-depot network is intended to balance the operational workload and improve overall train availability. By distributing maintenance points across different sections of the route, technical teams will be able to carry out essential upkeep closer to operational zones rather than relying on a single central workshop.
While Thane and Surat will provide vital operational capacity, the Sabarmati Rolling Stock Depot in Gujarat is being equipped to handle both light and heavy maintenance. That facility will include workshops for bogie and equipment maintenance, car body repairs, wheel re-profiling, emergency repairs, general inspection sheds, and an automated train-washing plant.
The workshop infrastructure has been designed to service 16-car trainsets. It will feature dedicated lines for bogie exchange and general inspections to facilitate full overhauls and replacements. Sabarmati will initially operate with four inspection lines and 10 stabling lines, with plans to expand to eight inspection lines and 29 stabling lines as train traffic increases over time. The site will also incorporate four groundwater recharge reservoirs, sewage and effluent treatment facilities, and waste disposal systems.
Officials stated that the rolling-stock depots across the network are being outfitted with advanced machinery and specialized systems being introduced in India for the first time. The network of facilities in Thane, Surat, and Sabarmati will form the backbone of train reliability and safety across the nation's premier high-speed rail line.
